What is your favorite thing you have done post-graduation?
My favorite thing I have done post-graduation is apply what I have learned to real-world scenarios. I am now enrolled in graduate school and am further pursuing higher education to expand my knowledge and elevate my success in this field.
Where did you grow up?
I moved around a lot when I was little, but I mostly settled and grew up in Peabody, MA. My parents, both from Pakistan, moved here just before I was born.
What made you choose the major that you did? Did you consider any other options?
I chose sports and movement science as my major because I knew I wanted to dive into the world of exercise science, as this is what I was passionate about. I loved the idea of combining exercise and science. I am continually intrigued by learning about the human body and how it functions. I also value the role of exercise in promoting health and perceive my field as more than just a career; it's a way of life.
Were you involved in any groups or clubs on campus? What impact did they have on your post-grad life, if any?
I was an active member of the Muslim Student Organization (MSA) on campus, which had a significant impact on my life. It provided a welcoming space to meet people with similar values and backgrounds, helping me form friendships that I continue to maintain today. Being part of MSA also taught me how to engage with and encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate, as well as how to organize and attend inclusive and enjoyable events for everyone.
What classes or faculty members had the greatest impact on you?
Dr. D'Amico was a phenomenal professor and person. His influence on me and many others has inspired me to expand my path within this field. He brought a style of teaching that was unique, engaging, and passionate, connecting us deeply to the content. He truly wanted us to learn, apply the knowledge, and be successful.
Dr. Ely was tremendous, passionate about her subject, and gifted with a teaching style that resonated with me. Her kindness and knowledge inspired me to go above and beyond in her classes.
Dr. Maybury was an exceptional professor and PT whom I aspired to emulate. His depth of knowledge and ability to apply it in the classroom made every lesson engaging and impactful. He strengthened my passion for Physical Therapy and rehabilitation science. Courses such as Kinesiology, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, and Health Promotion & Disease Prevention provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge that I continue to apply as I begin my graduate journey in Physical Therapy.
While these classes and professors stood out, the entire program provided exceptional instruction that significantly contributed to my success. Professors Schoen, Dion, Abboud, Vellante, Gillis, and the rest of the faculty made my experience at SSU truly special, and I could not have asked for better mentors and program leaders.
Was there a specific out-of-classroom learning experience that was especially significant to your career preparation?
My internship through SSU, where I worked as an aide in an outpatient physical therapy clinic, was pivotal in shaping my success and paving the way for both my academic and professional careers. The experience provided me with a valuable perspective on my end goal, what I wanted to become, and what it takes to achieve it. I especially appreciated how my coursework and clinical work complemented one another, allowing me to apply concepts from school to practice and vice versa. This integration of learning and experience set me ahead and solidified my passion for the field.
What was one of your favorite moments at Salem State?
Some of my favorite moments at SSU included attending classes that fueled my love of learning, spending time with friends on campus, and experiencing the sense of belonging that made the campus feel like home.
What was your favorite activity or event that you attended?
Some of my favorite events on campus were through the MSA. I always looked forward to those as opportunities to have fun and connect with others. Attending Scream Fest through SSU was also an especially enjoyable experience.
What has your journey looked like post-graduation?
Since graduation, my journey has continued with further education. I have been applying the knowledge and skills I gained at SSU in my daily life, whether in the gym, training and educating others, or building upon those skills in graduate school as I pursue my Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
What advice do you have for prospective students thinking about following in your footsteps?
My best advice for students considering a similar path is to engage deeply with the content to determine if it is the right fit, and get involved! The more you connect with professors, practicing professionals, and fellow students, the better you can assess whether this environment is suited to you. Be inquisitive and don’t be afraid to try new things; there are many branches within this field where you can contribute to society using your unique gifts and skill set.
What do you wish you had known before starting college?
I wish I had learned earlier how to better manage my time. The most challenging part of school for me has been learning how to compartmentalize my workload. Developing consistent study patterns and schedules is crucial, as building effective study habits—tailored to your individual learning style is imperative to success. Find what works best for you and stick with it.
What is your best advice for future students?
My best advice for future students is to stay open to every opportunity and embrace challenges as chances to grow. Get involved in activities, explore different areas of the field, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Keep a positive mindset, focus on what you can control, and remember that every experience, big or small, can teach you something valuable. Stay curious and committed, and you’ll make the most of your journey. Trust the process!
What are you hoping to accomplish in the future?
I am hoping to complete graduate school and earn my Doctorate of physical therapy. After attaining this degree, I may explore starting a business and opening my own gym or practice. Another aspiration of mine is creating music as a personal hobby.
Where is your favorite place to study on campus?
The library was a valuable space for completing assignments, studying, and enjoying a quiet environment. The lab provided access to anatomy models and resources for hands-on learning. It was also a great space for group study, where we could use the whiteboard, quiz each other, and apply the models to enhance our understanding visually and practically.
Where was your favorite place to hang out on campus?
The library was a great place to hang out in between classes to chop it up with peers and friends. Additionally, there was a conveniently located prayer room in the library for those who practice faith, which my friends and I took advantage of. Furthermore, the outdoor seating areas were enjoyable for socializing and relaxing when the weather was nice.
